“searching a long threaded webpage is easier than you think. try this: for windows, control F and you get this handy little search window at the top or the bottom of your browser’s window. There you type in the key words, like “Spanish” or “US History”, hit enter and blam you get directed to that place. For Macs, follow the same idea but click command f.”

I have been producing Skype programming for K-12 classrooms for two years. Much of that work was for The LIVEbrary, a project from Annick Press to bring authors into classrooms. We used a variety of technologies other than Skype, too, including ooVoo, FreeConferenceCall, and simple text-based chat.
I also teach authors how to use Skype to present online programs and reach into schools. Just last week, I used Skype videochat to teach a class for the Arizona Book Publisher’s Association. All of these technologies are very exciting.
I teach Internet Public Relations at Tulane University in New Orleans and have taught for many years at such places as PMA’s Publishers University, Stanford University’s Professional Publishing Program, UCLA Extension, Rowan University, and the PRSA International Conference. I’m co-founder of the International Association of Online Communicators and author of the currently out-of-print book, “Publicity on the Internet.”
I taught my mother (80+ years) how to use Skype and wrote an article about it for The PMA Independent. Here’s a link for those who are new to Skype:

Hello Ann, I am an English language Arts teacher in the USA. My students are 17 years old and are studying what we call advanced placement or university level English. We are exploring the topic of “wisdom through the ages”, and non fiction writing as well as the art of posing the Argument. Some of the topics that my students will debate are: social justice, climate change and shift, and global politics. I am especially interested in my students meeting yours because of the cultural differences. My students and I are African American and Caribbean. We at Millis High School are very strong in the field of Web 2.0 and 21st Century Learning. We currently have two classes at MHS. Advanced Web 2.0 and Standard Web 2.0. Last year was the pilot year for Web 2.0, and it went so well they carried the returning students over to Advanced Web 2.0. Our class has created as Wiki, http://milliswiki.wikispaces.com, which we worked on last year and it is now completed. What we would like to do is Skype with other classes to talk about Web 2.0 using our Wiki as a resource. For younger students we can talk to them about Internet safety. We are open to any educational effort so we can apply Skype to the classroom.

Hi there! This is a great way to start a Edu Skype Registry! I am an instr. tech. spec and math teacher at a high school in MA, USA. We here are chomping at the bit to start a Skype initiative! We have been told that the bandwidth to the school will not support the video conference. Next year we should be all set. I am still tempted to try though. I have been using Skype from home(with video) to tutor students in mathematics from all over. I would love to try a Skype session with someone. Thanks to skypeintheclassroom, I’ve made contact with some folks at the Biblioteca Pública in San Miguel de Allende, my favorite place in the whole world. In a few weeks we hope to link one or more of my Spanish 1 classes up with some kids from San Miguel de Allende, using the computer lab at the library.
I am so grateful for this service; I’ve been trying for a year or so to make a connection with a school in a Spanish-speaking country, and to find one in San Miguel is a dream come true!

Yesterday some of my 8th grade Spanish 1 studeents were able to skype for the first time with high school students from a technical school just outside San Migue de Allende, Mexico, thanks to the efforts of the Biblioteca Pública de San Miguel, Linda Lowrey and Richard Keep and Dale Eby. Although the 8th graders had som edifficulty holding back-and-forth converstions with native speakers, it wass a good start. As a result of our first experiment, I’ve gotten some upper school teachers interested in trying Skype in their classes, where students have more vocabulary and grammar to work with. My school is very excited about what we’re doing and my hope is that the idea will spread into other disciplines soon.

I had heard some good things about it, and after getting an account for class I have been very impressed with how well it performs and how many possibilities it presents. Just this evening the local news had a story from Fayette, Ohio about a student with cancer. The local public school technology director made the needed preparations for this boy to “attend” all of his classes using Skype. The building has wireless access throughout, so it was very workable. Another good use would be for after school tutoring or evening help. I sometimes get phones calls about math problems, and a Skype call with video would be quite effective. Hours would have to be set! Another use is explained on the following web site. Hello everyone! I am an EFL teacher from Russia. I have 2 groups of students who are very different in their age, level of English and goals. I am the educational tech coordinator at a K-5 school in Seattle, WA. Our fourth graders study religions of the world and are interested in skyping with other schools about their studies of religion. I work for Made by Many, a digital consultancy based in London, and Skype have commissioned us to define and create a service which will (hopefully!) be of great assistance to teachers who want to utilise Skype in the classroom.
Our approach to this project is very much based around gathering input from the community of experts working in this area, as well as teachers who are interested in incorporating technologies such as Skype into the classroom.

I teach middle school grades 6 – 8. Sixth grade learns Ancient History and I would like to have that class connect with a classroom in another country, which could ideally match one of the ancient cultures we study. We would also like to connect to an English (as a foreign language) classroom where they may practice their English and we may ask about their culture.
Ideally I would also love to connect to a classroom in the American South during our Civil War Units (in 7th and in 8th grade) for the students to gain perspective on the other side of the fight. I teach english to 6th graders (age 10- 11) in a german school and I’m looking for skype sessions (maybe twice a month) with native English speaking pupils. I think that could be fun and the pupils could learn a lot from each other (hopefully my pupils improve their English J ). I am a 4th – 8th grade math and science teacher in North Carolina. Hi Ken,
I’ve been wanting to do something with skype in the middle school classroom for a while now. One idea was to teach a guitar song over skype to a neighbouring campus 3 k up the road but that didn’t happen because out timetable didn’t sinc up. I realise I could have recorded the Skype session but wanted to go live.
Another idea which I will pursue this year is get students on camp to skype in to a staff meeting, but I’m really scarred to use skype in the ICT classroom or just stuck for safe ideas in general, can you help or direct me to someone who is using it live streaming in ICT class?

I am a 6th grade French Teacher in New Jersey, USA, looking to Skype a class from France or another Francophone country. My students are learning elementary level French and would love to practice their conversation vocabulary. We also are doing a research project on culture in Francophone countries. We would love to interview students about certain aspects of their particular culture. This could be a rewarding experience for both classes!
