Hello World.

My name is Ken Kellner, I have started this site to help connect teachers and classrooms, but alas, my involvement has come to an end and I would like to give the management of this site over to someone else; someone who can give it the attention that you all deserve. Please contact me if you are interested. kmkellner@gmail.com

Ken Kellner

Hi everyone out there in the edu-Skyper community,

People sometime say,  “I love your site but how do I search it to find what I am looking for?” To which I say,

“searching a long threaded webpage is easier than you think. try this: for windows, control F and you get this handy little search window at the top or the bottom of your browser’s window. There you type in the key words, like “Spanish” or “US History”, hit enter and blam you get directed to that  place. For Macs, follow the same idea but click command f.”

My name is Ken Kellner and I started this site. I am can be reached at kmkellner@gmail.com. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need to communicate any ideas you have on how to expend our community.

Thanks, Ken

  1. STEVE OKEEFE Says:

I have been producing Skype programming for K-12 classrooms for two years. Much of that work was for The LIVEbrary, a project from Annick Press to bring authors into classrooms. We used a variety of technologies other than Skype, too, including ooVoo, FreeConferenceCall, and simple text-based chat.

I also teach authors how to use Skype to present online programs and reach into schools. Just last week, I used Skype videochat to teach a class for the Arizona Book Publisher’s Association. All of these technologies are very exciting.

I teach Internet Public Relations at Tulane University in New Orleans and have taught for many years at such places as PMA’s Publishers University, Stanford University’s Professional Publishing Program, UCLA Extension, Rowan University, and the PRSA International Conference. I’m co-founder of the International Association of Online Communicators and author of the currently out-of-print book, “Publicity on the Internet.”

I taught my mother (80+ years) how to use Skype and wrote an article about it for The PMA Independent. Here’s a link for those who are new to Skype:

    http://www.ibpa-online.org/articles/shownews.aspx?id=2611

And I’ve done a review-up of Skype tutorials available online. You’ll find that piece at the LIVEbrary Blog:

  128. Skype In The Classroom « Crusader Math Blog Says:

[…] November 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment I have only had a Skype account for a very short time.  I had heard some good things about it, and after getting an account for class I have been very impressed with how well it performs and how many possibilities it presents.  Just this evening the local news had a story from Fayette, Ohio about a student with cancer.  The local public school technology director made the needed preparations for this boy to “attend” all of his classes using Skype.  The building has wireless access throughout, so it was very workable.  Another good use would be for after school tutoring or evening help.  I sometimes get phones calls about math problems, and a Skype call with video would be quite effective.  Hours would have to be set!  Another use is explained on the following web site.  It offers free 10-15 minutes Skype contacts with authors, with longer contacts possible for a fee.  http://skypeanauthor.wetpaint.com/     Another great website appears to be The EduSkypers Phonebook, a blog which lists educators looking for contacts to have Skyping experiences in their classroom. https://skypeintheclassroom.wordpress.com/2008/10/31/lets-build-a-community/#comments    […]

      1/14/10

      Greetings,

I am a 6 – 8th grader computer tech teacher in Iowa. I have 8th graders in class for the next 8 weeks and would like to have them experience Skype at least once.

I have not used Skype in the classroom and have only seen it being used in non-educational settings.

I have six classes everyday, the time frames are below (we are Central Std. Time), I believe I probably would be able to condense down if six periods is too many times for your schedule.

      1st 8:30 – 9:12
      2nd 9:15 – 9:57
      3rd 10 – 10:42
      4th 10:45 – 11:27
      5th 12:50 – 12:42
      7th 1:30 – 2:12

    • Tracy Peterson Says:

      Joyce,

I have connected three of my six classes with a classroom in CA…now would like to find a connect for the other three classes.

The first time – students just asked each other ? like – how big is your class, how many classes do you have a day, lunches, etc.

I am looking for connections sometime in the class times listed:

      8:30 – 9:15
      9:20 – 10:00
      1:30 – 2:15

We are central standard time. I have 8th grade students for the next three weeks.

      Thank you,

    • Joyce Says:

I have some set up to discuss with our tech guys. Haven’t worked with them yet on setting up a camera that will work in my room. However, assuming that works out, I really want to expose them to video conferencing and how it works and then, if the timing works, I would be open to any kind of project – whether it is just a weekly meeting discussing current events, national news, whatever. It is the process more than the content at this point that I am interested in.

      Thanks for responding!

I am a fifth grade teacher in NY teaching a departmentalized curriculum. I currently instruct the Science to all fifth graders and teach my homeroom reading as well. I am interested in possibly anything – I am currently exploring rocks and minerals and moving onto volcanoes & earthquakes / Plate tectonics. I will probably have the children track the earthquakes.

Within reading it may be possible to try book talks – my class loves the Percy Jackson and 39 Clues series.

If you think we may have something in common, email me. I would like to try anything, even possibly reading aloud to younger children (for fluency on behalf of my students) .

let me know what you think,

        Hi Ellen,

Do you have 5th graders? Our 5th graders study the states, and would be interested in learning more about Mardi Gras and how you celebrate it.

The 5th grade class would be anytime in the morning from 8:30 to about 12 PST (I guess that’s 10:30 to 2 CST).

Would your students be interested in “teaching” about Mardi Gras? Ours would love to learn, but would also be happy to share ideas about life in northern California.

Let me know if you would like to try and work together.

    Hello!

I work for Made by Many, a digital consultancy based in London, and Skype have commissioned us to define and create a service which will (hopefully!) be of great assistance to teachers who want to utilise Skype in the classroom.

Our approach to this project is very much based around gathering input from the community of experts working in this area, as well as teachers who are interested in incorporating technologies such as Skype into the classroom.

I am searching for teachers who might want to provide some input into this process.

If you would be interested in either talking via Skype – my Skype username is juzmcmuz, it shouldn’t take more than 30-40mins – or being in touch via email, please let me know at justin@madebymany.co.uk

Thank you. I appreciate any input some of you might be able to provide.

    Regards, justin

I teach middle school grades 6 – 8. Sixth grade learns Ancient History and I would like to have that class connect with a classroom in another country, which could ideally match one of the ancient cultures we study. We would also like to connect to an English (as a foreign language) classroom where they may practice their English and we may ask about their culture.

Ideally I would also love to connect to a classroom in the American South during our Civil War Units (in 7th and in 8th grade) for the students to gain perspective on the other side of the fight. Another idea (admittedly taken from another comment) would be to connect to a classroom in England during our (7th grade) study of the American Revolution.

Also, I provide lessons for paying adult ELLs who are at least intermediate or advanced. The lessons are engaging, challenging, and systematically build English vocabulary using engaging documentaries at the student’s level of English.

    Hi there,

I am a professional piano teacher who teaches live online using Skype. I got tired of advertising websites asking me for a physical, geographical location. I am sure you have experienced the same in the past!

So I started my own listing directory service exclusively for fellow online teachers:

    http://online-teacher-directory.com

Here you can create a basic listing free of charge. This includes a description of your service and all your contact information.

There is also a FaceBook page where you can also introduce your classes:

I look forward to hearing from you!

I am a 6th grade French Teacher in New Jersey, USA, looking to Skype a class from France or another Francophone country. My students are learning elementary level French and would love to practice their conversation vocabulary. We also are doing a research project on culture in Francophone countries. We would love to interview students about certain aspects of their particular culture. This could be a rewarding experience for both classes!
Merci!

Who are you looking to Skype with?
    1. I would like to skype with one or all of my classes from German speaking countries to exchange culture and language. Ideally, it would be nice to come up with a joint project that does not focus so much on developing language skills but more on content and building bridges between cultures.
    2. I am also interested in connecting with classes from other countries using German as the language of communication. I would prefer connecting my 8th grade students (13/14 years) who have been learning German for 3 years.

I am interested in Skyping with a class from a French speaking country. I wish my students to be able to communicate authentically with their peers from another country, in order to learn more about the language and the culture.
